What’s the Latest at Steel Revival
This week’s work on the Case XX restoration lot has shifted from handle cleanup to the real heart of the project: repairing years of edge damage. Several of these blades came in with chips, rolled edges, and grinder‑induced flat spots that had completely erased the original geometry. Before any sharpening could happen, the first task was to re‑establish a clean, continuous apex.
That meant going slow and controlled on the diamond plates — removing just enough steel to chase out the chips without over‑thinning the blade. Each pass reveals a little more of the knife’s true shape, and it’s incredibly satisfying to watch the edge straighten out and come back to life.
Surface scratches have been another focus. Some were shallow enough to blend out with progressive abrasives; others were deep grinder scars that needed careful leveling to avoid changing the blade’s profile. The goal isn’t to erase the knife’s history — just to remove the damage that doesn’t belong there.
These old Case steels respond beautifully when you treat them with patience. Every blade in this lot is starting to show the clean lines and crisp edges they were meant to have.
Tips & Techniques
Getting the Most Out of Diamond Stones
Diamond stones are some of the most efficient, predictable tools in the sharpening world when you’re correcting damage or rebuilding geometry. But like any tool, they shine brightest when used with intention.
- Use Light Pressure: Let the diamonds do the work. Diamond plates cut aggressively on their own. Too much pressure slows the stone down, creates deep scratches, and wears the plate prematurely.
- Lubrication Matters: Some Diamond Plates accept water, and some don't. A spritz of water (or water with a drop of dish soap) helps to clear swarf and reduce friction. Only use water on plates that the manufacturer (DMT, KGS, & Atoma) recommends. Make sure to completely dry the stone after each use.
- Work in Short, Controlled Strokes: Especially when repairing damaged edges. Short strokes help you stay on angle, prevent you from “rolling” the bevel, and give better feedback on burr formation.
- Check Your Progress Often: Diamond stones remove metal fast. Pause every few passes to inspect the bevel under light. A small flashlight or phone light can reveal a lot.
- Clean the Plate: A quick rinse or scrub with a nylon brush keeps the diamonds exposed and cutting efficiently. A clogged plate feels dull even when it isn’t.
